Trends in the RV market

1. U.S. ownership of recreational vehicles has reached record levels, according to a 2005 University of Michigan study commissioned by the Reston, Va. based Recreational Vehicle Industry Association. Nearly one in 12 U.S. vehicle-owning households owns an RV. That adds up to 8 million households - a 15 percent increase in the number of RV-owning households from 2001 to 2005 and a 58 percent gain from 1980 to 2005.

2. The typical RV owner is 49 old and married, with a household income of $68,000.

3. Baby boomers account for the largest segment of RV ownership, as well as for the fastest-growing segment of the market.

4. More RVs are now owned by those ages 35 to 54 than any other group, according to the University of Michigan study.

5. Approximately 8.2 million RVs are on the nation's roads, according to the University of Michigan study. RVIA estimates that nationwide there are as many as 20 million RV enthusiasts, including RV renters.

6. RV rentals have become a $350 million per year business, experiencing a 63 percent growth rate from 1997 to 2002, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and the RVIA.

7. The 2001 University of Michigan study reported that one in six U.S. households intends to buy an RV in the future.
